Southern Upland Way Walk
Greyhound Gap are delighted that Marc, Steve and Stuart are walking for us again this year. Walking sounds a bit tame really since this journey is going to test their mental and physical resolve and we are incredbly appreciative that they are willing put themselves through this for our hounds.
Marc Norman, Founder of Walking The Beat, is 33 years old and has been in the police for 11 years, Steve Bright is 49 yrs old, and has been a policeman for over 25 yrs and Stuart Parkinson is 23 yrs old and has been a PCSO for almost 3 years.
They are walking the Southern Upland Way Britain’s first official coast to coast footpath opened in 1984. It crosses a tremendous variety of scenery and to walk it all is an unforgettable experience taking in 212 miles of wild and relatively remote stretches of Southern Scotland. The route begins in Portpatrick on the west coast and concludes on the east coast at Cockburnspath.
The challenge begins September 21st and concludes October 1st during which the team hope to round the walk up to 220 miles over 11 days (20 miles per day).
All 3 have greyhounds or lurchers either personally or in their families including some Gap hounds which is why they have chosen to raise money for Greyhound Gap's Kennel Fund. Gap are trying to raise £100,000 for a deposit on a property. Gaps's future long term aim for the rescue is to secure a property of our own. By having our own property not only would it reduce the costs to the charity, it would allow for more one to one attention for any hounds needing extra rehabilitation and training. To have the opportunity to work more intensely with our more troubled hounds would give them a greater chance of finding a new home. Having our own property would also enable us to hold workshops for schools and other interested groups. They would come to meet the hounds and learn about dog welfare in general. In order to achieve our dream we need to raise a deposit of at least £100,000."
